Steve Corbin

Director and Principle Investigator

Dr. Corbin has been a Professor of Materials Engineering since 1997 when he first took up a position at the University of Waterloo in Waterloo, Ontario. Dr. Corbin is currently the NSERC/Pratt and Whitney Canada Industrial Research Chair in Structural Brazing and Processing of Powder Metallurgy Superalloys, at Dalhousie University in Halifax, Nova Scotia. His work is primarily in the areas of powder metallurgy and joining of light metals (e.g. Al and Ti) and Ni based superalloys for aerospace and automotive applications. Corbin’s focus within this field, is the application of high temperature thermal analysis, including differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), Laser Flash Thermal Diffusivity (LFTD), combined DSC/Thermogravimetry (TG) /gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS), and dilatometry, to the development of advanced sintering and brazing operations. Together, sintering and brazing represent net shape, additive manufacturing methods which can reduce costs, energy usage and materials waste, making them sustainable manufacturing methods.

In the past, Dr. Corbin has also worked in the areas of porous metals and composites for battery and solid oxide fuel cell applications, laser cladding and additive manufacturing, smart solders for microelectronic packaging, NiTi shape memory alloys and deformation and damage in light weight metal matrix composites.

Dr. Corbin’s work is often done in collaboration with industrial partners including Pratt and Whitney Canada, Wescast Corporation, Kingston Process Metallurgy, Dana Corporation, INCO Ltd., International Tooling Systems, Microwear Corporation, Research in Motion, Celestica Inc., Boeing Inc. and Alcan International.

Working with young, bright and enthusiastic individuals is a particularly gratifying aspect of Dr. Corbin’s profession. So far in his career he has had the pleasure to work with 6 Research Associate/Engineers, 8 Postdoctoral Fellows, 15 PhD, 14 MASc and 24 co-op students. Details on the background of these current and past team members can be found in the People tab of this website.
